Apple recently unveiled three new iPhones to its range including flagship model iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus at the newly built Steve Jobs Theatre in California. Apple decided to skip the iPhone 9 and launch iPhone X to celebrate Apple’s 10th Anniversary.
Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus already went on sale online on 22nd September while iPhone X will be on sale on 29th September. Let’s have a comparison of the list of new features and hardware that pits the iPhone 8 vs iPhone 8 Plus vs iPhone X and lets which one should you decide to buy.
Hardware and Features of new iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
First of all, we will talk about the design of all of three handsets. iPhone X has the biggest sized display amongst iPhone 8 & 8 Plus and has an incredible design.
It comes with all screen OLED display and even surprisingly Apple also ditched its signature home button and touch ID is placed on-screen. It used Aerospace grade 7000-series metal frame sandwiched between two layers of glass. Since the front is mostly display, the iPhone X isn’t as massive as the display suggest. In fact, it’s more compact than the iPhone 8 Plus.
Comparatively, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus comes with thicker bezels, volume rockers and power button present on the left side edge. Their design is similar to the last generation models, but Apple has used scratch resistant glass on the rear which does make a difference (while also making the iPhones a tad thicker). The glass on the rear is built for wireless charging, which wasn’t a feature in previous iPhones.
iPhone X features a 5.8 inch(diagonal) OLED Super Retina HD True Tone display with the resolution of 1125 x 2436 pixels and one million-to-one contrast ratio. This full view display shows you bright and accurate colors and offers an amazing experience while watching videos and playing games.
The HDR display of iPhone X supports Dolby Vision and HDR10, which together make photo and video content look even more amazing. True Tone display was introduced earlier on the 10.5 inch iPad which automatically adjusts the screen based on the ambient light in the room to offer more accurate colors.
On the other hand, iPhone 8 is equipped with 4.7-inch Retina HD display and the 8 Plus has a 5.5-inch Full HD Retina display. These displays have a contrast ratio of 1300:1 and 1400:1 respectively, which is quite good for an IPS LCD panel. All the three phones support 3D touch that was first introduced in iPhone 7 & 7 Plus launched last year.
The new iPhones come with redesigned stereo speakers that are up to 25 percent louder than previous versions of iPhone. They deliver deeper bass, enabling richer-sounding music, videos and speakerphone calls.
The company touts that they have built fastest chipset till date for all three iPhones. iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are powered by the new 64-bit six core A11 Bionic processor coupled with M11 Motion co-processor and a three-core GPU. The chipset is 25 percent more powerful than A10 chipset (and that’s saying something) and the GPU is 30% more powerful compared to iPhone 7 or 7 Plus.
A11 Bionic also integrates an Apple-designed GPU with a three-core design that delivers up to 30 percent faster graphics performance than the previous generation. Performance of these handsets should definitely be smooth, even when you are playing heavy games.
iPhone 8 flaunts a single 12MP rear shooter, while iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X come with dual rear cameras with 12MP + 12MP resolution. Primary rear cameras come with several features like Quad-LED True Tone Flash, f/1.8 aperture, six element lens and video shooting up to 4K resolution. Secondary 12 MP rear snapper of iPhone X and 8 Plus has a telephoto lens, f/2.8 aperture, and 2x optical zoom.
All three iPhones are paired with 7 MP front-facing shooter with Retina flash, f/2.2 aperture and full HD video recording. They come with improved, sharp and detailed cameras. Even the front camera gives you a good amount of brightness, natural colors and overall more detailed images with front flash.
Apple has also introduced a new feature, Portrait mode with Portrait Lighting, that brings dramatic studio lighting effects to iPhone, allowing customers to capture stunning portraits with a shallow depth-of-field effect in five different lighting styles.
The new camera also delivers the highest quality video capture ever in a smartphone with better video stabilization, 4K video up to 60fps and 1080p slo-mo up to 240fps. With the launch of iOS 11 update, both iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus support HEIF(High Efficiency Image File Format) and HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) for up to two times compression and storage for twice the photos and videos.
Software and Security
iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus run on iOS 11 which is Apple’s latest software update and comes with few interesting features such as new gestures, Siri translations and the new Animojis (iPhone X exclusive).
Instead of flagship fingerprint sensor for security, iPhone X has introduced a new facial recognition feature FaceID for better security. FaceID works much faster as compared to the fingerprint scanner. But fingerprint scanner in other iPhones allows you to add 5 fingerprints, while Face ID in iPhone X restricts you to register with only one person’s face at a time.
Apple further states that the unlikeliness of someone else unlocking your iPhone X using FaceID is 1 in a million, whereas compared to TouchID is 1 in 50,000.
Let’s talk about Animojis, the latest feature of iPhone everyone is talking about. There are many emojis coming in iPhone X that will mimic your facial expressions or movements and you can send this personalized emojis to friends. These Animojis will take your face features via FaceID technology of iPhone X and tune your emojis accordingly.
According to the company, these Animojis can analyze your 50 different muscles and then copy each and every face moment with the help of True depth camera and intelligent A11 Bionic processor.
Battery and Storage
Apple didn’t disclose the battery of any iPhone model at the time of launch. However, all these iPhones have been gone through the TENAA certification in China that reveals that iPhone 8 and 8 Plus comes with smaller batteries compared to their predecessors.
iPhone 8 has 1821 mAh battery and iPhone 8 Plus houses a 2675 mAh battery, while iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have 7% bigger batteries (that is, 1960 mAh for iPhone 7 and 2900mAh for 7 Plus).
