Microsoft launches Surface Studio, a studio aimed at designers

Microsoft Surface Studio for Artists

Say hello to the newest launch from Microsoft, the Surface Studio. With a display only 12.5mm thick, Surface Studio proudly claims the thinnest LCD computer monitor built. The 28-inch display is foldable down to a 20-degree angle, thus allowing you to create akin to studio settings. What impresses most are its 10 point multi touch capability, an amazing ‘zero gravity hinge’ that allows you to weightlessly move the screen from an upright angle to a flatter studio mode and with its 13.5-million-pixel display.

The Surface Studio boasts a 6th generation Intel i5/i7 core processor, RAM variants of 8GB, 16GB and 32 GB, a 4 GB NVidia GeForce GPU and hard drive variants of 1 TB and 2 TB. The ports include 4 USB jacks, SD card slot and Ethernet port. Speaking on the launch of the new product, Ralf Groene, Microsoft’s Head of Industrial Design said that Microsoft is constantly trying to refine and push things forward. The Surface range initially launched back in 2012 with the hybrid tablet ‘Surface’. It has proved to be a hugely successful series of computers in collaboration with Taiwanese electronic giant Pegatron. Designed keeping fashion and practicality in mind, Surface aims to be the ultimate ‘carry with you’ computer device that you can use for almost all work functions from scribbling notes at a board meeting to designing your dream home.

Microsoft Surface Accessories Mouse, Keyboard, Pen, Dial

Specially designed accessories are the Surface Mouse, Surface Pen, Surface Dial and Surface Keyboard. The Keyboard, that connects through Bluetooth 4.0 LE, is specially designed to avoid wrist
strain while working. With a double cushioned palm rest and split space bar, the Surface Keyboard is a neat and elegant addition to your workspace. The Surface Mouse, like the Keyboard, is neatly designed. It fits in your palm and connects through Bluetooth 4.0 / 4.1 LE.

The Surface Pen was initially announced at the launch of the Surface Pro. Design rests in detail and the Pen delivers exactly that alongside the Surface Studio. You can draw, take notes, navigate the system and much more. Additionally, the Pen can be attached magnetically along the side of the display thereby making it easy to use and ensuring it doesn’t get lost. The Surface Dial is a unique tool that helps you interact more fruitfully with your system. On screen interaction will be compatible with most of the Surface Studio apps and provide quick drawing
access functions such as options to change brush or colour. Microsoft has also announced upgrades early 2017 to make the Dial compatible with the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4.

Microsoft Surface Studio Setup

The Surface Studio is not built for the regular desktop user. As the ad pitches, it’s primary target audience are digital artists. Yet, most indie artists might not be able to shell out the big bucks that the Surface series demands. Those looking to buy the system for personal use have been advised to wait at least a year and look forward to how the Surface Studio fares. Based on feedback, Microsoft may want to consider producing Surface Studios in different sizes and price variants.

Pre-orders have already begun online with initial orders shipping early 2017. Pre-order the Surface Studio before December 1 and receive a Surface Dial. The Surface Studio is priced at $2999 which converts to 1,99,975 INR approx. Would you consider the Surface Studio the ultimate challenge to the reigning Apple iMac? Do write in.
