Xiaomi’s first notebook, the Mi Notebook Air at $750 could be an Apple Macbook Air killer

Xiaomi Launches Mi Notebook Air

The Chinese company Xiaomi at its special event held in Beijing, unveiled its first ever Notebook ever, the Mi Notebook Air, thinner than the Apple Macbook Air 13.3” model at 14.8mm while the Mi Notebook Air 12.5 model measures 12.9mm. At the event, Xiaomi launched, the Redmi Pro, the first Redmi smartphone with OLED screen and highest contrast ratio.

The Mi Notebook 13.3” is priced at $750 or 4,999 yuan approx INR 50,000 which is almost half the price of Apple Macbook Air 13.3″ which costs $1,449 approx INR 96,500 for 256GB SSD model. The 12.5” 128GB SSD model  costs approx $525 or 3,499 yuan approx INR 35,176.

Xiaomi’s entry in the struggling laptop market is quite an interesting one, which comes after it had forayed into various product segments like action cameras, water purifiers and lots more. The $60 billion startup hopes to experiment in various segments, besides already storming the budget smartphone market.

The Mi Notebook Air 13.3 inch model comes with NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics that lets you play games like Dota 2 at 85 frames-per-second at Full HD resolution. The 12.5 inch model does not include NVIDIA graphics card, but wins on battery life delivering 11.5 hours than 13.3 inch model which gives just 9.5 hours battery life. The aluminum body comes in gold and silver, and there’s a backlit keyboard.

Both laptops have metal housings and the official Windows 10 operating system. You can also synchronize the Mi Notebook with your smartphone via a special application, and unlock the access to its desktop using the Mi Band.

Mi Notebook Air 13.3”

The Mi Notebook Air 13.3” model comes with 13.3” Full HD display of resolution 1920 x1080 pixels. It measures just 14.8mm in size and weighs 1.28kg. The hardware specs, includes 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-6200U (Turbo up to 2.7GHz), 8GB of DDR4 RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics card (1GB GDDR5), a 256GB PCIe SSD with a factory expandable SATA SSD slot, and 802.11AC Wi-Fi.

Ports include Type-C USB for charging, 2x USB 3.0 ports, 1x HDMI port &  3.5mm audio port. The 40Wh battery gives 9.5 hours battery life and USB Type-C charging goes from 0 to 50%  in just half an hour.

Mi Notebook Air 12.5”

The Mi Notebook Air 12.5” model is even slimmer at 12.9mm and lighter at 1.07kg. It slightly lower on the hardware with Intel Core M3 with integrated graphics, no dedicated GPU. 4GB of RAM and just a 128GB SSD via SATA and there is one free PCIe slot. Instead of two USB 3.0 ports, you get just one and there is an HDMI port. Two speakers manufactured by AKG are installed in the device as an audio system.

The impressive features and price might get you excited to own one of these beauties, but hold on there is a disappointment, it’s only available for sale in China. It will go on sale from 2nd August, we are eagerly waiting for an international release, which are hoping to to take place soon.
